Catalog Description

Evolution, functional biology, distribution, and classification of birds. Montana species recognition is developed through laboratory use of a representative skin collection.

Overview

Birds are among the most familiar groups of organisms. This course covers the evolution, functional biology, distribution, and classification of birds. Lecture topics will include an overview of avian diversity and taxonomy, characteristic adaptations, life history, and reproduction. Labs will focus on morphological features and visual and audial identification of common Montana species.

Course Organization and Format

Monday and Wednesday class periods will consist of 50-minute lectures. Thursday labs will involve supervised but open-ended study of museum study skins and other reference material.

Textbook

  • Gill, F. B., & R.O. Prum. 2019. Ornithology. 4th ed. W. H. Freeman and Co. 666 pp. Required. (2 copies will be at the MSU library on 2-hr reserve.)
  • A field guide to birds. No specific field guide is required but you will need to have 1 of the following: Peterson’s guide to Western Birds; Robbins, Bruun, and Zim’s Guide to Birds of North America; The Audubon Society’s bird guide; Sibley Birds West or Sibley Birds; or National Geographic’s guide to birds. The National Geographic guide is certainly one of the best and is in the bookstore. Required.

Learning Outcomes

  • Describe the key characteristics of birds and to summarize their evolutionary history;
  • Explain the mechanisms and types of avian flight as well as the physiological adaptations that support avian flight;
  • Summarize and describe the key features of the avian brain, sensory system, and communication systems;
  • Explain to explain the daily and annual biorhythms of birds and to summarize their roles in avian migration and navigation;
  • Describe and summarize avian mating systems as well as avian reproduction and the rearing of young;
  • Identify birds of Montana by sight and sound.

Grading

Your grade will be based on lecture exams (3 non-cumulative exams, 50 points each), lab quizzes (your best 5 scores on 6 lab quizzes, 10 points each); 3 non-cumulative lab exams (50 points each), participation (25 points), and an independent eBird activity (25 points). Drop / Add Policy

MSU’s registration processes can be found on the Registrar’s website. January 27th is the last day to drop online; February 3rd is the last day to drop without a “W” on your transcript; April 15th is the last day to drop with a ‘W’ on your transcript.

Generative AI tools are unlikely to be helpful for the class. If you find yourself drawn to use them to study for exams, I encourage you to exercise caution. Any work produced by AI cannot be submitted as your own. I will not spend extensive time policing this—the loss is primarily yours—but if detected, I will consider it academic misconduct.

Collaboration

University policy states that, unless otherwise specified, students may not collaborate on graded material. Any exceptions to this policy will be stated explicitly for individual assignments. If you have any questions about the limits of collaboration, you are expected to ask for clarification.
